City Archives

Archives Church Pirie StreetThe Adelaide City Council, the oldest municipality in Australia, was founded in 1840.

The documentary heritage of the City is preserved in the Archives, Civic Collection, and Oral History collections.

The City Archives was established in 1978 when Council appointed the first archivist. Initially the Archives were located in the Adelaide Town Hall before moving to purpose-built archival standard accommodation within the Corporation-owned Topham Car Park in 1986.

Archives are valuable records which are considered worthy of being preserved permanently. The Archives holds about 5,000 shelf metres of records. The records exist in a wide variety of physical formats: volumes, files, documents, photographs, maps, plans, microfilms, computer printouts, tapes and CDs. Archives are not necessarily ‘old’ records. As technology advances, so does the range of formats in which archives can exist.

The Council’s archives are stored in a special atmospherically controlled, fire-proof repository. Any records that are damaged or deteriorating can be repaired in the Archives’ conservation laboratory.
